The short version

The most comfortable months for a day trip are late spring and early autumn. Yerevan’s May and September highs are 25.1°C and 29.2°C. July and August are hot, with highs around 34°C and very little rain. January is cold, with average highs of 1.7°C.

Garni Temple, Geghard and the Symphony of Stones can be visited in any season. The weather changes what you wear and how long you want to stand outside. It also changes opening hours at Garni, so read the hours section below.

Weather by month

These figures are for Yerevan, from Wikipedia’s 1991 to 2020 averages. We found no climate table for Garni itself. Garni sits at about 1,400 m, which is close to the highest point of Yerevan (1,390 m), so it may run a little cooler than the city’s lower districts. Treat the table as a guide rather than a forecast.

Month Average high (°C) Average low (°C) Rain (mm)
January 1.7 -7.8 21
February 6.3 -5.4 21
March 13.7 0.9 60
April 19.8 6.4 56
May 25.1 10.8 47
June 30.9 15.1 24
July 34.5 19.1 17
August 34.4 18.9 10
September 29.2 13.2 10
October 21.6 7.1 51
November 12.8 0.1 25
December 4.2 -4.9 21

Wikipedia gives the city about 363 mm of rain a year and about 2,675 hours of sunshine.

Spring: March to May

Wikivoyage describes spring in Yerevan as green and mild. March and April are the wettest spring months in the table, at 60 mm and 56 mm, so bring a waterproof. Highs climb from 13.7°C in March to 25.1°C in May.

Wikipedia says neopagans hold ceremonies at Garni on 21 March, which they treat as the pagan New Year. We found no source on how crowded the temple gets on that day.

Summer: June to August

Summer brings heat and very little rain. July’s average high is 34.5°C, rainfall is 17 mm or less from July to September, and Wikipedia records a peak of 43.7°C on 12 July 2018. Start early, carry water and a hat, and expect a hot walk back up from the gorge.

Some guides say Garni stays open later in summer. See the hours section for the caveat. Wikipedia also describes Vardavar, the water festival, in this season.

Autumn: September to November

Wikivoyage calls autumn the most popular season in Yerevan. September is still warm, with a 29.2°C high and 10 mm of rain. October cools to 21.6°C but is wetter, at 51 mm. By November highs are 12.8°C and lows are around freezing.

Winter: December to February

Winter is cold, and Yerevan does see snow. Wikipedia’s table shows an average extreme snow depth of 5 cm in January and December. Wikivoyage warns that sidewalks can be icy.

GOV.UK says roads are in a poor state from November to February, and advises avoiding driving outside towns in the dark. If you go in winter, a tour or driver is safer than a hire car. The Armenian tourism committee’s Yerevan page highlights festive lights, cafes and holiday markets in the winter season.

Choosing a month

  • Mild weather and green hillsides: April and May, with highs of 19.8°C and 25.1°C. Pack a waterproof for March and April, the wettest spring months.
  • Warm and settled: late September. The average high is 29.2°C and rainfall is only 10 mm. October is cooler at 21.6°C but brings 51 mm of rain.
  • Long sunny days: June to August, with about 327 to 354 hours of sunshine a month in Yerevan. December has about 91.
  • Quiet and cold: December to February, when sunshine drops to roughly 91 to 137 hours a month and lows fall below freezing.

In July and August, start early. A morning arrival also matches the advice from guides about fewer tour groups, and it keeps the walk to and from the gorge out of the hottest part of the day.

Opening hours by season

We could not find an official timetable for Garni, Geghard or the Symphony of Stones, and independent guides do not agree.

  • Garni Temple: One guide updated in August 2025 lists 10am to 9pm in summer and 10am to 5pm in winter, and says it is open every day. Another, checked in August 2026, lists Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 9:30pm. A third lists 9am to 10pm. None gives dates for when summer or winter begins.
  • Geghard: Guides report roughly 8am or 9am to 8pm. A transfer service says daylight hours, and another guide says hours vary by season and by religious services.
  • Symphony of Stones: One guide lists 9am to 6pm.

Because the ranges differ, ask your tour operator or driver for the current hours on the day. Our Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery pages carry the details for each site.

Crowds, weekends and holidays

We found no visitor counts by month or day of the week. Wikipedia gives annual figures for Garni Temple: nearly 390,000 visitors in 2019, about 250,000 of them Armenian and 137,400 foreign. Most visitors that year were local, not tour groups from abroad.

For fewer people, a transfer service suggests the morning or late afternoon at Geghard, and another guide says the same for both sites.

Armenia’s non-working public holidays include 1 and 2 January, 6 January (Christmas), 27 and 28 January, 8 March, 24 April, 1 May, 9 May, 28 May, 5 July, 21 September and 31 December (Wikipedia). We found no source saying whether Garni or Geghard change their hours on holidays, so check if your trip falls on one.

Festivals and events

Wikipedia says Vardavar falls 14 weeks after Easter, usually in July. The Federation of Youth Clubs of Armenia runs a Vardavar International Festival at Geghard and Garni each year. We found no dates for the festival, so check ahead if you want to see it, or avoid it.
